SUMMARY:SYK Seminar Series: Do You Know Where Your Digital Assets Are?
DESCRIPTION:   \nPresented by Victoria Blachly and guest Glenn Williamson \nIn the U.S.\, 2.6 million people die every year. How many had their affairs in order? How many left passwords and instructions for dealing with their online accounts and information? \nAs trustees\, personal representatives\, or family and loved ones left behind\, how does one go about locating\, accessing or managing important digital assets\, such as electronic financial statements\, digital family photos bequeathed to relatives\, or wrapping up an online business? \nLearn more from SYK litigator and digital asset lobbyist\, Victoria Blachly\, about planning for what happens with digital or virtual assets and online information when you or your client dies or becomes incapacitated\, and the need for a VAIL (Virtual Asset Instruction Letter). This seminar will provide helpful planning tips and an update on the legislative changes in Oregon – and nationwide – where stakeholders are wrestling with necessary statutory changes. \nGlenn Williamson\, founder and CEO of WebCease\, Inc.\, a Portland-based business\, will also present on how his company helps heirs\, executors\, trustees and administrators find online accounts that are digital assets for the estate of the deceased.  WebCease’s rapidly expanding service identifies active online accounts and instructs on the different options for retrieval\, closure or memorialization in accordance with the policies of each site. Learn how using their affordable service can save time for families\, assist fiduciaries\, and help reduce the risk of identity theft\, with their “nothing found\, nothing charged” policy for legal professionals who offer the following services to their clients: Probate Administration\, Estate Administration\, Trust Administration\, and Guardianships/Conservatorships.

SUMMARY:SYK Seminar Series: Famous Wills and Infamous Estates - 2014
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Glen Goland and Michael Walker \nThis 90-minute discussion will illustrate the practical lessons we can learn from the estates of Presidents\, Princesses and Rock Stars. \nWe’ll provide the audience with an understanding of wills\, powers of attorney\, and end-of-life care documents by looking at the estates of Robin Williams\, Philip Seymour Hoffman\, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis\, James Gandolfini\, Marilyn Monroe\, and others. \nFew of us will ever make millions on our acting chops or music skills\, but our estates may run into the same issues as those of the rich and famous: imperfectly executed or updated documents\, substance abuse problems\, fighting relatives\, and charges of improper influence over Mom or Dad.

SUMMARY:SYK Seminar Series: Estate Planning for Parents and Grandparents
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Glen Goland \nHistory is littered with stories about children and grandchildren losing the wealth they inherited.  It does not seem to matter whether your last name is Smith or Rockefeller: creditors\, predators\, family members and the beneficiary’s own demons can make an inheritance vanish. \nThis discussion will center on the different tools we can use to protect children and grandchildren’s interests\, and to encourage these beneficiaries to be productive members of society. We’ll talk about some recent Oregon case law that affects beneficiaries’ rights\, and will review different provisions that can be used to minimize the risk of claims against a beneficiary’s assets.

Tim recently returned from working for the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICTY for the second time. During his most recent service\, Tim spent six months at the Tribunal where he was part of the team preparing for trial in the Radovan Karadžic case. Before that\, he served four years as a legal officer for the Tribunal where he conducted in-court direct examinations in international war crimes trials and traveled extensively throughout the former Yugoslavia investigating serious violations of international humanitarian law. Tim’s experience has been included in articles in the Lewis & Clark’s alumni magazine and Oregon State Bar Bulletin (at https://www.osbar.org/publications/bulletin/09oct/smallworld.html ). Tim is admitted to practice in Oregon and Washington. \nDoug Stringer – \nSince 2007\, Doug has been a Senior Trial Attorney and Appeals Counsel with the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) at the ICTY. Doug is currently leading the Prosecution team in the trial of Prosecutor v. Goran Hadzic\, the last ICTY accused fugitive who was captured and transferred to the Tribunal in August\, 2011. Doug was a co-leader of the prosecution team in the trial of Prosecutor v. Jadranko Prlic\, et al.\, a multi-accused case that is one of the ICTY’s longest and most complex trials and is currently responsible for the appeal after all six accused were convicted in 2013. He was a Trial Attorney with the OTP from 1997-2002\, and has also worked in the field as an International Prosecutor in Kosovo (2004) and in Sarajevo (2005). A practicing lawyer since 1984\, Doug is a former white collar crime prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice and worked in private practice in Portland\, specializing in white collar criminal defense and complex litigation. He has conducted numerous jury trials in US federal courts and practiced extensively at the federal appellate level. Doug is a member of the bar of the State of Oregon\, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit\, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Proc. 2014-18\, discuss the potential liability that professional advisors face when counseling their clients and talk about some steps that professionals should consider taking in order to mitigate this liability risk. \nTo register\, please contact us at events@samuelslaw.com or 503-226-2966. \n
