We mourn the passing, and celebrate the life, of a beloved friend and a leader of our Samuels Yoelin Kantor family.
Owning and running a thriving business requires energy, passion and commitment. Its ultimate success, however, may be measured by the extent to which an exit strategy is thoughtfully planned and executed.
Firm partner Steve Kantor will be participating in an upcoming panel discussion called “From Entrepreneur to Investor: Successfully Navigating the Transition.” The discussion will explore the succession plan of a business, and the importance of building the right team for a successful and profitable transition from entrepreneur to investor in today’s economic environment.

SYK partner Christine Costantino is the featured speaker at an upcoming event, "New Legal Issues for Same Sex Couples: Navigating Effectively in the Changing Tides."
The event is being presented by the Oregon Jewish Community Foundation Professional Advisors Group on October 24 at the Multnomah Athletic Club. The event is sponsored by First Republic Bank, Oregon Angel Fund, Rosenbaum Financial LLC and Brian Suher, Sr. Vice President, RBC Wealth Management.
Christine will discuss how the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in United States v. Windsor, which overturned part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act ("DOMA") defining marriage between one man and one woman as unconstitutional, impacts the rights (and responsibilities) of same sex couples here in Oregon and other states specifically in marriage, divorce, and estate planning on both the state and federal levels.
Christine is committed to helping families and family-owned businesses navigate the complex and emotionally challenging territory of Family Law. Her trademark philosophy — love your children, protect your assets, and preserve your legacy — guides her law practice as she helps clients with a number of legal issues including divorce and dissolution of domestic partnerships; prenuptial and domestic partner agreements; contested custody, child and spousal support issues; grandparents’ rights, contested guardianships and conservatorships, as well as fiduciary litigation.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Darth Vader died at the end of the movie Return of the Jedi. Moviegoers around the world flocked to the cinema to see the story of Vader’s redemption and to learn about the twisted Skywalker family tree.
SYK Estate planning attorney Glen Goland was 9 when "Jedi" was released. Today, when he sees the Star Wars movies, he’s haunted by questions like, “Did someone have to administer Vader’s estate?”, “How much did Vader get paid?”, and “What sort of property would a guy like that have?—Does he own his spaceship? Have a condo somewhere?”
Clearly, Glen has been spending too much time looking at estate planning documents.
Glen’s musings about estate planning and Star Wars will fuel a fun and informative session this Thursday, as The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Baird Private Wealth Management, and Samuels Yoelin Kantor LLP present "Estate Planning: Lessons from a Galaxy Far, Far Away." The discussion examines three important lessons taxpayers can learn from the Star Wars galaxy that may help in preparing their own estate plans. These three lessons relate to the following:
This lively discussion will explore Darth Vader’s lack of foresight, George Lucas’ intelligent tax planning, and much more wisdom. Afterwards, attendees will enjoy an exclusive, behind the scenes tour of OMSI’s internationally renowned exhibit production shop.
For information on the presentation, please contact Meghan Ridenour at 503-797-4601 or mridenour@omsi.edu.

We’re pleased to announce that Van White, III has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Building Material Dealers Association (BMDA). He has been a member of the organization for nearly 20 years.
BMDA, a not-for-profit organization, serves the construction industry. BMDA is a Notice of Right to Lien provider, and assists material suppliers and contractors in Oregon and Washington in order to protect their construction lien rights/claims for payment. BMDA was founded in 1915, and the membership is comprised of hundreds of building material suppliers and contractors.
BMDA is important to the local construction industry, and the economies of Oregon and Washington in general, because it helps secure lien rights and payment claims for material suppliers and contractors on construction projects. They help businesses of all sizes get paid for the materials and services provided to construction projects.
Van says he is excited to join the board for a couple of reasons: the valuable service that BMDA provides to its members/customers, and their high quality of work. BMDA is known for accuracy, skill, punctuality, and its seasoned professional staff. The organization also has access to the most comprehensive title data base available.
Each year, corporate groups volunteer their time to collect, pack and process millions of pounds of food for the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) — and recently, our team of attorneys, staff, and friends did their part to support this organization’s important efforts.
Oregon has seen record increases in the need for emergency food boxes. Statewide emergency food box distribution has increased more than 9 percent over the previous year, and has increased a whopping 41% since the beginning of the recession in 2008. This represents 270,000 people per month — a number that represents more than half of the City of Portland’s population.
To support OFB, our team held an after-hours volunteer session at the Volunteer Action Center, where we packed 15,392 pounds of food. This represents 12,827 meals, and 366 meals per volunteer. Now those are some stats we can get excited about!
OFB welcomes volunteers as individuals, families or as part of a corporate, community or service group. For details, check out OFB’s website.

PLANNING FOR TAX LAW CHANGES FOR 2013 AND BEYOND
Thursday, March 7, 2013
7:30 – 9:00 A.M.
at Samuels Yoelin Kantor LLP offices
Light refreshments will be served
Presented by Glen Goland and Valerie Sasaki
Congress changed estate and income tax calculations dramatically when they passed the American Taxpayer Relief Act on December 33, 2012. The new legislation has given us some stability, as the new rates and tables are about as permanent as things get when dealing with our Congress. We will talk about these changes and discuss the impact the new tax structure has on the families and businesses that we advise.
Glen Goland utilizes his years of experience in the financial and legal sectors to create estate plans that work for his clients and efficiently administer trusts and estates. Valerie Sasaki specializes in jurisdictional tax consulting, working closely with Fortune 50 companies involved in audits before the Oregon or Washington Departments of Revenue.

LITIGATING CONTESTED GUARDIANSHIPS
Thursday, March 21, 2013
7:30 – 9:00 A.M.
at Samuels Yoelin Kantor LLP offices
Light refreshments will be served
Presented by Victoria Blachly and Denise Gorrell
Guardianships are designed to protect those that cannot protect themselves. Two of our experienced fiduciary litigators, Victoria Blachly and Denise Gorrell, will discuss how trial attorneys balance the need to protect legal and civil rights with the need to protect impaired persons from harm. If you work with elderly clients or have aging family members, then this seminar will provide valuable information about evaluating potential guardianships, and how a fiduciary litigator prepares for a contested guardianship hearing. Learn about ideas for practical resolutions and the complexities that can develop when mental health and family conflict clash in the courtroom.
Victoria Blachly’s litigation experience focuses on fiduciary litigation for individual trustees, corporate trustees, beneficiaries, and personal representatives, including trust and estate litigation, will contests, trust disputes, undue influence, capacity cases, claims of fiduciary breach, financial elder abuse cases, petitioning for court instructions, and contested guardianship and conservatorship cases. Denise Gorrell focuses on real property and commercial law, as well fiduciary litigation. She frequently represents clients on real estate disputes, business dissolution, and trust contests.

Wednesday, February 13, 2013
7:30 – 9:00 A.M.
at Samuels Yoelin Kantor LLP offices

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner — and chances are some of your clients will be commemorating the romantic holiday with an engagement ring or other symbol of commitment.
That said, it’s the perfect time to gain a deeper understanding of both prenuptial and domestic partnership agreements. Samuels Yoelin Kantor partner and family law attorney Chris Costantino will lead an informative discussion of how these agreements apply to same sex couples as well as to opposite sex couples from the Family Law perspective. She’ll also cover the legal aspects, timing issues (it’s called “pre” for a reason!), and how reliable or enforceable these agreements are in the courts. Chris will also provide a brief summary of the history of domestic partnership law in Oregon and what applies today.
